Dusky Cardinalfish

Phaeoptyx pigmentaria

During the day these small Cardinalfish hide under rocks and in recesses close to the sea floor in depths as shallow as 1 foot and deeper. They have a dark spot under their eyes and they have a bar at the base of the tail. They have more prominent scale spots on their bodies than other Cardinalfishes. Usually where there is one, there are more. They're only about 2 1/5 inches long.
