Black Pinnacle Sponge

Neopetrosia carbonaria

This black sponge is seen in shallow water environments and encrusts or overgrows rocks and other substraits.  I have not seen this same growth pattern in any other color. The pinnacles remind me of the rock pinnacles  along Needles Highway in South Dakota.
