Branching Vase Sponge

Callyspongia aculeata

Vase sponges come in different shapes. I've separated them into three groups. This, the 'branching', then the 'elongated', then the 'rippled'. They grow at all different depths starting at about seven feet. the straight tall tube sponges seem to be in shallower depths, calmer water away from heavier currents. Their exterior has a slightly spiky appearance, thin walls and varying colors from grey to lavender and brownish red.
