Banded Clinging Crab

Mithrax cinctimanus

This small (1/2 to 3/4 inch) crab can be found in various habitats from the deep folds of blade fire coral, to hiding in finger corals or taking refuge under various anemones like the Sun Anemone or Giant Anemone.  The cream colored carapace (the top of their exoskeleton) is often covered with very fine hairlike fibers. They are a "true" crab, (they don't live in discarded snail shells). All these were found at snorkeling depths between 3 and 6 feet.
