Basket Star

Echeneis naucrates

Since basket stars are night suspension feeders (wait for bits of food that float by suspended in the water), they curl up and stay dormant during the day hiding in rock crevasses. They emerge after complete darkness and unfold their massive arms. They are generally a orangey-brown color, although black ones have been found also, and when fully extended can reach a foot and a half in diameter.
