Caribbean Reef Squid

Sepioteuthis sepioidea

It is always an amazing pleasure to come across reef squid. Schools of three to forty often frequent the shallow waters late in the day. One interesting fact about the Caribbean Reef Squid that they have the largest eye-to-body ratio in ALL the animal kingdom, land or sea. They have ten tentacles, eight short and two longer tentacles, tucked inside, lined with suckers to capture prey.  Both the male and females die shortly after producing their eggs for the next generation.  They use body light signaling to communicate with each other. Specific colors and patterns mean different things. They are tolerant of snorkelers and if you use slow none threatening movements, you can get quite close.
