There are a couple species of needlefish, but the most common seen is the Flat Needlefish. They swim just below the surface and are always around schools of baitfish. Length will be anywhere from a few inches to three feet long with dark body bars. Color is greenish/blueish silver on the back and silver on the belly. They generally aren't over reefs except if there is a school of bait fish nearby. The lower tail lobe is longer than the upper. The other species is the Houndfish Tylosurus crocodilus  and the least commonly seen, the Keeltail Platybelone argalus
