Pillar Coral

Dendrogyra cylindrus

Pillar Coral firsts encrusts the substrate and then starts growing in tall columns or spires. Most here are light brown to golden brown, a few are a darker brown.  There are some colonies that have spires growing upwards of 8 feet or more. They can be seen at almost any depth to 65 feet. They grow from the sea floor or encrust vertical walls. All of the colonies shown are now dead.
