Red-ear Herring

Harengula humerali

The herrings are the largest of the schooling bait fishes, growing up to 6 inches in length. Any time you see pelicans and cormorants diving for fish in a bay or near a shoreline you can be pretty sure there is a school of herring beneath the surface. It also means that there is a good bet there will be Tarpon lurking about as well. Don't miss the opportunity to snorkel and observe this type of feeding activity.  Both herring and Tarpon can be found in brackish water.
