Variegated Sea Urchin

Lytechinus variegatus

The Variegated Sea Urchin live in or very near sea grass beds. The urchins spines are a good deterrent to would-be predators, he uses his "hats" as shelter from the light. Their colors can be all white, or combinations of white with maroon or green. In 2006, a scientific study was held in Brazil to study the feeding preferences of this urchin. Not suprising, its first choice was the softest grasses.
