Yellow Pencil Coral

Madracis mirabilis

The Yellow Pencil Coral is in a different Family than the Finger Corals. Finger corals have smooth branches when polyps are retracted and the Yellow Pencil Coral has openings that are similar (but different) then Boulder Star Coral. When polyps are extended, the branches have a fuzzy appearance. Found in deeper water, 8 feet plus, a fore reef area of clear water. Colonies 1-2 feet in diameter, fairly uncommon.
